After Pentecost the Kingdom of Three Persons is mediated by the Holy Spirit to you. In the Spirit as life-giving spirits, our mission is to mediate Jesus to the world. In this we are the new creation.
The fact that God is three personed tells us that God values person-hood. ‘Person’ is big with God. The Father’s intention was that we ‘grow into fullness as the Sons of God’ by being with God. The Enemy’s lie is that you can ‘become as gods’ by knowing good and evil. Today the latter and the letter is expressed as the practice of religion, whether expressed as bondage to law, general Christian norms, or things like church growth formulae, planting churches or new configurations of the church.
Under the old covenant God came to people through law, regulations, priesthood and temple. Today God comes to us through Jesus. This is another way of saying that life now comes to us through a person – the Person of Christ. To find fullness as a person we have to be ‘Personed’.
Although salvation was mediated through the old covenant, it was imperfect. Before the fall humanity received life directly from intimacy with God. Father and son were one. The image of God was nurtured in Adam and Eve by the Father in face to face encounter. Life was mediated from the person of God to the persons of men and women. Human life was imparted by God-life. Unaware of categories of good and evil, Adam and Eve lived in the Spirit of Life. They ‘just lived’ and were holy because they lived in HIS PRESENCE and were sons.
But since Eve chose a path to godliness via the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God chose for a time to use a system from that tree to redeem us – the old covenant. Paul refers to such a system as ‘the letter’ and a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.
Humans need a structure to live by. But not the kind of structure most are living by now. It has to be a structure that is primarily Godly, human and personal. We need a structure that is (a) God-filled (b) Human (c) Alive (d) Boundary setting (e) Redeeming (f) Liberating (g) Personal (h) human and (I) Spirit-filled.
All of this is the living word as Christ our life. ‘The word was God’ - the Father provided such a ‘structure’ in His Son, a Person who is God and man and the Head of the Body. The law of the Spirit of life is none other than Jesus, the Son of Man, of whom it is written ‘All the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form’ Col. 2.9 (NIV). God’s intention is that the law of the Spirit of life be multiplied in us through THE PERSON of His Son. There is a structure. It grows from relationship with Christ. It is sourced in intimate relationship. It is His House and it is ‘made without hands’.
There’s a telling line in Hebrews referring to Jesus as, ‘One who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life’ Heb. 7.16 (NIV). This is to say One who is fully human, fully alive and eternal. The way to live in the law of the Spirit of life is to have all the fullness of the deity and the fullness of humanity living in you at once! The law of the Spirit of life is not less than. It is infinitely larger than, more dynamic than, more life-giving than, more comprehensive than, more holy than the ten commandments. The life of God cannot be expressed in words. It is expressed in the Son of God. It flows from He who is the power of an indestructible life. The Spirit of Life is a river of life that flows from the throne of God.
Before the fall life is mediated Person to person. After the cross life is mediated Person to person. After Pentecost the Kingdom of Three Persons is mediated by the Holy Spirit to you. In the Spirit as life-giving spirits, our mission is to mediate Jesus to the world. In this we are the new creation.
