What Counts is a New Creation


God’s solution for our situation is Himself as our life. Not a re-ordering of the knowledge of good and evil with a Jesus Boost.


That which Solomon wrote about wisdom on the old testament is lived in us in the Spirit of Christ in the new – or not.

When Jesus declared Himself the way, the truth and the life, He declared Himself the way into fellowship with the trinitarian life of God. To make morality the over-riding issues is the law re-formulated. This means the undoing of The Plan in favour of religion and a rebaptism into Adam’s separation from God and his un-life and non-righteousness. The fact is that neither the law or sin is the big issue. The real issue is union versus non-union with God.


Any talk which begins with sin as a problem that messed up God’s plan is a bigger problem than the sin problem itself. It implies that God was outplayed right from the start by a very un-intelligent player such as Sin. But God is not a bad chess player. In fact, He has declared a secret checkmate in Christ before the timer even began.  Working from sin towards Christ is bad theology. Working from Christ towards sin, however more difficult it may be, is fundamentally the point. We don’t know how, but we know Who. Jesus Christ is the lamb slain from the foundations of the world, and if that’s true then sin is not, nor has it ever been, a problem for God. Sin, then, is the great non-problem problem.” (1)


The point in the above is that when law/sin is the issue we are mired in the abstractions of the knowledge of good and evil and particularly so when our culture is derived from a theology of the law. Wading about in this swamp we personally debilitate our sonship. Should we develop such a theology into a community and a denomination, we create crippled communities of dead folks walking and talking.

We are never a participant in the divine nature in the law or the knowledge of good and evil. Here we are participants in words and abstractions. So that even when we define ourselves as ‘in the body’ we are as shadows rather than the reality of sons.


In Jesus we are joined to the Holy Family that is God and the trinity so that when we speak of ‘oneness’ with God we are not speaking definitions. We are speaking of people living in the reality of God’s life. This is Jesus’ version of sons of God in spirit and in truth.

Increasingly the issue in the church and the world is, will be live in reality or will embark on the chaos of the wholesale invention of our own realities?

Theologian Thomas Torrance emphasises that true knowledge is not about listing facts, citing scriptures or seizing on proof texts. It’s about knowing a state of belonging and being by participation in fellowship with God.


There is Someone who has been inside that closed circle of God: Jesus Christ the Son of the Father and the second person of the Trinity. He knows God as man, and is God to man. It is only through Him that we can know God. Knowledge of God is Christocentric, for it is only in meeting the Divine Word in human words can we understand anything about God. The incarnation is therefore essential to knowing God. We could not know God if it wasn’t for Jesus Christ. As Karl Barth writes, “God is to be known only through God Himself.” (2)

Thus it’s important to know God as God is and worship God’s Christ and not some false christ. Christ is not a representation of the law but He is the exact expression of Father and He lives in us. Christ is who you are and who you are becoming. Or not.
