The hope and the reality of new creation life is Christ in us. The new creation dawned when Jesus was born. It gathered momentum as Jesus grew up and was demonstrated by His life. It was guaranteed by His death and was declared by His resurrection. When Jesus breathed on His disciples before ascending in it was a symbolic act. This was a re-breathing of the Spirit of God into humans that was first seen when Father breathed His spirit-life into Adam at the first creation.
At Pentecost the ascended Christ came in the Spirit to the gathered Believers and all who take the name of Jesus. The Jesus who reigned beside the Father in heaven would reign in His people on earth. He would be their life. Joined to the Father they would live in the spirit of sonship to be sons and multiply what Jesus had begun. This includes His miracles which are a sign of the reality of His new creation life. But it is not only His miracles. It is the life that is His, the life that John said was 'life in itself' and who sustains all that is by His powerful word.
Jesus Himself is spirit and truth. He is the express image of the Father in whom all that is exists. This is why Christ and not external things must be our life. In Him we are joined to the Father and the life of heaven that flows through us by the Holy Spirit.
'This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us' 1 John 1.2 NLT.
When Jesus is our life the regenerating power of the new creation lives in us. Paul calls this the power that raised Jesus from the dead. But here's the point. New creation life is ours when we are alive in Christ. Not existing half alive in a false christ or half dead in the old creation.
'And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy' Col 1.18 NIV. Christians can know this gospel as a theoretical scheme yet deny it in their daily lives. How? We can attempt to earn the love of God and the respect our our colleagues through ostentatious effort. But self-effort forms a barrier against the very life of God that would nurture our lives. It is religious activity that suffocates the spirit of sonship and the grace and authority that multiplies through us in this realm. Let's not weary ourselves striving for what is already ours. Why live as a worker when you are really a son?!
As Believers we can deny the new creation by living in the old creation. Old covenant thinking comes naturally to the natural man because it was formed in the knowledge of good and evil that Adam introduced. Only in Christ is this veil taken away. Only in Christ can it be seen that what we thought was living in Christ was really living in ourselves and the Christian Stuff that we had allowed become a 'false christ.' Only when Christ is our life are we heirs of the Kingdom and the new creation our possession.
'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!' 2 Cor 5.17 NIV.
'Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation' Gal 6.15 NIV.
'Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen--the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's new creation' Rev 3.14 NLT.
