One cannot fall in love with a belief system. But we can develop co-dependency on one. This is not the real marriage of the self with God. It’s the marriage one has when one is not having a marriage. It serves as a prelude and a lesson in the drinking of waters that are not alive, so that we will develop a thirst and a passion for living water.


The heart seeks union with God. This is its beginning and fulfilment. Either the heart will not stop seeking until this union is experienced. Or it will feed itself on substitutes, anesthetise itself to reality and live a life without ever having really lived. This is the fate of the tare as compared to the wheat or the missed inheritance of one who lives from the law, without ever having found himself as himself in oneness with Jesus.


Sex as a pursuit in itself is common today. One can get all kinds of advice on the mechanics of sex and scarcely anything on ‘being.’ It should be obvious but it isn’t that sex finds its real delight in oneness of being.


You might say that sex without deep connection and oneness of being is like the man who lives from the law and calls this a relationship with Christ. It’s mechanical but it’s not about ‘being’. This is why one can find a scripture about belonging to the Body of Christ while only belonging in a superficial sense. All belong but those who have a passion for Jesus as Himself belong better and fuller.

Richard Rohr observes, “The fact that some form of loving must precede true knowing helps us appreciate why the prophets used the intimate word for carnal knowledge or sexual intimacy when they spoke of “knowing” God (see, for example, Hosea 2:21, 6:6, and John 10:14–15, 14:20, 17:3). This is a tremendous insight, but one that comes only from inner realization and not from books.” (1)


The entire book of the Song of Solomon is an elaboration of this theme – the truth that our inion with God is similar to a superb union with our husband or wife. The religious person may have difficulty accepting this for what it is. Not so the spiritual person for whom the life of God inhabits every area of living, particularly relationships.


Religious people can have trouble accepting their sexuality because they have trouble accepting their humanity. You were not created as an abstraction but as an embodied spirit. Your body is you. The son of God sanctified our body. Don’t think a gnostic vision of the body bad/ the soul good comes from God. It’s a figment of the knowledge of good and evil and its contrived sacred/secular dichotomies. God created eroticism and Jesus redeemed it.

As a community representing a ‘belief system’ we can be a valley of dry bones. With Jesus as our life we are Brides of Christ and sons of God. Not notionally but in spirit and in truth. Fundamentalisms can produce good walking zombies and valleys of clacking dry bones. Christ our life multiplies sons and daughters of God who are fully human and fully alive.


True knowing is ours as we are one flesh with God. This is why Christ comes in our flesh and why Christ as an externality is a religion and not a life. It is why the knowledge of good and evil is both counterfeit knowledge and a shadow of the truth.

Truth separated from union with God is not truth. It’s the knowledge of good and evil.

To know anything in its real essence we must live in God. We were made to live in God and we have been joined in our being to God’s being. ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV. This is our NOW LIFE. This is the day you will begin to know God, know yourself and be able to love God with the love with which He loves you. You will not have to strive to do this. You will love as God loves because He is part of you.
